Capturing Essence

Overview

I was tasked with analyzing and documenting the production techniques of a MoMA Museum Store item for Communication Arts magazine. The final deliverable included a professionally written and designed article, featuring an in-depth review of the packaging and printing techniques used in the selected item.

Selected Item

For this project, I chose Frida Kahlo: An Illustrated Biography, a visually striking book that stood out due to its vibrant colors and intricate finishing techniques. The packaging and production choices for this book encapsulated the essence of Frida Kahlo’s artistry, making it an ideal subject for my analysis.

Concept & Research

I started by visiting the MoMA Museum Store in NYC to survey various items. I photographed potential selections and analyzed their production techniques. However, I ended up choosing Selected Frida Kahlo: An Illustrated Biography due to its rich color, design elements and unique printing methods.

After taking extensive photos, I studied the book’s cover, binding, typography, and interior pages. I then identified key production elements, including offset lithography printing, debossed and embossed gold foil stamping, and uncoated textured paper. This helped me examine the way these techniques contributed to the book’s visual and tactile appeal.

Design Process

I started by creating a two-page magazine spread using Adobe InDesign, structured with a professional typographic grid. This way I had more control over my layout and element placements.

I drew inspiration from the cover colors for my selection and applied CMYK color space. I also retouched the images with photoshop to align with print production standards. Lastly incorporated captions, pull quotes, and detailed descriptions about the production still of the book to enhance reader engagement.

Initial Challenges

One of the biggest challenges was accurately identifying the printing and finishing techniques used in the book. Reverse engineering the production process required careful observation and comparison with class materials. After the initial draft, I received peer feedback through VoiceThread, prompting refinements in the design layout and technical descriptions to improve clarity and visual hierarchy.

Key Learning

  • Gained hands-on experience in print production analysis and technical writing.
  • Enhanced my ability to design for a professional magazine format.
  • Learned the importance of balancing aesthetic appeal with detailed technical descriptions.

Reflection

This project deepened my appreciation for the role of packaging in storytelling and branding. By dissecting the production techniques of Frida Kahlo: An Illustrated Biography, I developed a stronger understanding of how design choices influence consumer perception. This article now serves as a cornerstone piece in my portfolio, showcasing my ability to blend design analysis with compelling editorial work.
